If you study history of the family, make a family tree, and information from registers of births and revizsky fairy tales has not enough, you will be helped by documents which "confessionary" or "ispovedny" sheets are called.
The confessionary (ispovedny) sheet is an inundated register parafiyan churches which confessed at the priest. By drawing up the sheet it was used podvorovy printsin the account. The surname and a name of a parafiyanin and members of his family with the indication of age and estate (peasants, petty bourgeoises, noblemen) registered. If parafiyanin there was no long time for confessions, the reasons of its absence - resettlement, service were specified in army, etc.
For the first time maintaining ispovedny lists it is mentioned in 1697. The form consisted of the next columns: number (serial number) of houses or yards; number (serial number) of male people; female; estate or state; age; the confession had who and a sacred participle – "who confessed tokmo, but did not take the sacrament and for what "vinosloviy"; the confession did not have who. If the country family was full, in confessions of the end of the XIX century the surname registered once for all her members; at spouses the name and a middle name were entered, children have only a name.
If one of spouses died, in relation to the remained the widowhood was shown. Brought all children in lists year is more senior (in practice and half a year), but in the column about their confession the priest put a crossed out section. The Ispovedny list was signed by the prior of the temple
The decree of the Synod of March 7, 1722 obliged all parishioners "to be on a confession and a participle, since 7 years, at the priest". If the parishioner was not at home more than a year, he could confess at other priest where temporarily lived, but surely had to show in church in the place of residence the reference that he during this period confessed.
Importance of this church account that it contained very exact data on the number of the city and rural orthodox population, and also its social structure as in confessionary books for 1737 - 1842 representatives of seven main social groups, apart from dissenters, registered separately:
"domestic" - domestics of a shlyakhetsky rank and other ranks;
to "poselena" - peasants and solitary men.
In 1843 - 1860 confessionary books fixed six stanovy groups, and since 1861 - five: spiritual, military, state, city camps and peasants.
Ispovedny documents give exact data on the number of urban and country people of that time. As population censuses in certain regions of the Russian Empire (for example, in Left-bank Ukraine) were carried out irregularly, and their results are recorded is incomplete - confessionary sheets can become an important document when carrying out genealogical researches.
