Optical disks - a popular data carrier. Only CD and DVD disks are familiar to most of users, actually it is much more types of disks. Infoadvisor.net will tell you what types of disks happen, and will help you to understand their variety.
Types of CDs disks
CDs disks, or compact disks, were initially intended for record and reproduction of music, but now are used for storage practically of any computer information. Record and reading information of disks are carried out by means of the laser. Compact disk thickness - 1,2 mm, diameter - 120 mm, capacity - 650 or 700 MB (corresponds to 74 or 80 minutes of sounding). Exist pass CD with a diameter of 80 mm, but their capacity is less - 190-200 MB (21 minutes of sounding). Pass CD can be read on any carrier, except the autoradio tape recorder. There are figured compact disks of a various form, they are let out generally for commercial purposes. Such disks do not recommend to apply in computer drives because at a high speed of rotation they can burst.
CDs disks can be divided into CD ROM, the CD-R and CD-RW. This division is caused by opportunity to write down on a disk information and mission of a disk. Information on the disk CD ROM is written down by the producer, it is impossible to change or remove it, it is possible to read data only. On the disks CD-R (them sometimes in addition call "pigs") it is possible to write down the information, but to erase or change it it will be impossible. If on a disk there was an empty seat, and at record you resolved an option of addition of information, it will be possible to add files on a disk. The disks CD-RW support removal and rewriting of information, but such disks will be read not by all drives.
CD ROM drives can read any compact disks, CD-RW drives read any kinds of CD and write down the disks CD-R and CD-RW.
Types of DVD disks
DVD disks allow to store the bigger volume of information, than compact disks, thanks to the laser with smaller wavelength. Capacity of a DVD disk of the standard size (120 mm) can fluctuate from 4,7 GB to 17 GB, and capacity pass DVD (80 mm) - 1,6 GB.
Depending on the capacity of DVD allocate such types of disks:
DVD-5 - a single-layer unilateral disk, capacity - 4,7 GB
DVD-9 - a two-layer unilateral disk, capacity - 8,5 GB
DVD-10 - a single-layer bilateral disk, capacity - 9,4 GB
DVD-14 - a bilateral disk, two-layer on the one hand and single-layer - with another, capacity - 13,24 GB
DVD-18 - a two-layer bilateral disk, capacity - 17,1 GB
Two-layer disks contain two information layers on one party, they are marked with an abbreviation of DL. The bilateral disk is actually two disks which are stuck together by non-working surfaces. Naturally, thickness of such disk is controlled to correspond to thickness of usual single-layer DVD.
Whenever possible records, rewritings and removals of information DVD disks, as well as CD, share on ROM, R and RW. But in addition distinguish such types of disks:
DVD-R for general, DVD-R(G) - once the written-down disk intended for house use.
DVD-R for authoring, DVD-R(A) - once the written-down disk for the professional purposes.
DVD-RW - a re-recorded disk. It is possible to rewrite or erase information to 1000 times. But it is impossible to erase part of information, it is only possible to erase a disk completely and completely to rewrite.
DVD-RAM use technology of change of a phase. They can be rewritten to 100000 times, theoretical service life - till 30 years. But they are dear, are issued generally in special cartridges and are not supported by the majority of drives and players.
DVD+RW are based on the CD-RW technology and support rewriting of information to 1000 times. This format appeared later, than DVD-RW.
DVD+R - once the written-down disk similar to DVD-R.
It is clear that any drive or the player does not support completely all DVD formats. The majority of modern drives support both the DVD-R (W) format, and the DVD+R (W) format. But the old drives and household players which are let out before emergence of the DVD+R (W) format will read only the disks DVD-R (W). There are "supermulti" drives which support all types of disks, including DVD-RAM.
Other types of disks
Independently there are so-called Dual Discs. In these disks the CD and DVD formats are combined. On one surface of such disk music in a CD format, and on another - a five-channel sound, video, the menu, subtitlings, images and so forth in the DVD format is written down.
The disks HD DVD (DVD of high density) can have capacity to 15 GB, and two-layer - to 30 GB. Their main competitor - BD, Blu-ray Disc contains from 23 to 66 GB depending on quantity of layers. The prototype of a four-layer disk of 100 GB is announced, also release of ten-layer disks up to 320 GB is planned.
Opposition of BD and HD DVD received the name of "fight of formats". But the leading film studios refused use of HD DVD in favor of BD disks therefore release and support of the HD DVD format are officially stopped.
So, there is a set of types of optical disks. It is worth choosing a disk for a data recording proceeding from its capacity, possibility of rewriting of information and model of your drive or a household player. Knowing main types of disks, you will never get confused in their rich assortment.
