How to look after hamsters

Hamsters – lovely amusing animals, favourites of children. It is extremely fascinating to watch these rodents. However, the hamster is not a fluffy toy, but the living being therefore demands care and careful leaving.

In general, there are some different types of hamsters who can be contained in house conditions. The most widespread are the Syrian, dzhungarsky, Campbell's hamsters, Roborovsky's hamsters. Each of these types has the features of character, a habit, but there are some general rules on care of hamsters.

Practically all hamsters are single animals. They very badly get on with each other. Same-sex hamsters will often fight, and heterosexual – very often to breed that can lead to early aging and death of a female.

The cage for your hamster has to be convenient and spacious. Zoologists recommend to choose a cage for the considered species of hamsters not less than 50х30 cm in size. Rods of a cage have to settle down horizontally that your rodent could climb a cage.

For a hamster have to be in a cage: a drinking bowl, separate bowls for a dry and fresh feed, gryzovy a stone (mineral or cretaceous, for grinding of teeth of a rodent), a toilet. The hamster – an active animal and very much likes to run about. Therefore in its cage surely put a running wheel, it is desirable with a continuous surface, differently your small animal can break a pad. The more diameter of such wheel – the better.

As filler for a cage of a hamster sawdust, napkins or toilet paper without dyes, the special pressed or granulated filler can serve. By no means as a filler for a cage it is impossible to use VATU, even special for hamsters. In fibers of cotton wool the pad of a hamster can get confused and it will lead to violation of blood circulation of a pad or even to death of a hamster.

Cage with your favourite have far away from drafts, heaters, preserve against hit of direct sunshine. It is better to put a cage in a place, inaccessible to other pets or small children. Besides, it is better not to put a cage from hamsters near subjects which it can drag in the cage and izgryzt.

Hamsters do not love changes. Therefore it is not recommended to move a cage from place to place on your house. Each place in the house is taken by the smell to which hamsters are very sensitive. If the smell unfamiliar, a hamster very much is nervous. Also hamsters badly react and to changes in their cage. Therefore at full cleaning of a cage which is recommended to carry out approximately time in 1-2 weeks, it is impossible to break arrangements of subjects in a cage. Especially it concerns the so-called storeroom - a place in a cage where the hamster puts the stocks. Therefore experts recommend to clean only those products which deteriorated from the storeroom.

When cleaning a cage it is necessary to replace a hamster in any other place, for example, in bank (more). To clean a laying and to wash up the cage pallet solution of salt or soda with sand. It is also possible to use special shampoo for washing of cages of rodents. It is necessary to clean a toilet corner in a cage daily, a drinking bowl – once a week. After cleaning surely it is necessary to put a little sawdust or napkins from an old laying back in a cage. It will help a hamster to adapt for the washed-up cage quicker.

The hamster cannot be bathed! After bathing in water it can catch a cold and be lost. Better for cleaning of hair of animal to use a special kupalka.

It is not recommended to take out a hamster for walk on the street. The set of unfamiliar smells, street noise and vanity, cats or dogs - all this can frighten your pet and he will escape. To find it therefore it will be almost impossible. For walk it is better for your hamster to organize a special spacious zagonchik in your house. Walls of such zagonchik have to be rather high that the hamster did not get through them and did not run away. The hamster lost in the house can do harm to (be wounded, poison) or your furniture!

It is best of all to feed a hamster with ready dry grain mixes, grain sticks, grass granules, special biscuits or crackers for hamsters. The hamster will also eat vegetables, fruit with pleasure (but not citrus and not exotic), greens. Remember that usual fried, salty, fat, sweet or spicy food from your table is categorically contraindicated to a hamster!
