February 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day!
| On February 23 in many countries of the former Soviet Union celebrate the Defender of the Fatherland Day. From where this holiday undertook? How to celebrate it?|
The history of celebration of the Defender of the Fatherland Day totals here more than 85 years. In 1918, 15 (28 on new style) January, the decree about creation Working krestjyanskoy Red Armiiya, and a bit later, on January 29 (on February 11), - the decree about creation of Workers' and Peasants' Red Fleet was adopted. Already then the idea of establishment of Day of Red Army, but as propaganda action arose. After all then the army existed actually only on paper, it was necessary to push somehow volunteers to register in army.
It is a lot of years on February 23 as Day of Red Army, celebrated in honor of a victory in 1918 near Narva and Pskov over the German invaders. However in 1918 and even later, in 1919, told nothing neither newspapers, nor authorities about this victory. Already later - in 1922 – on February 23 began to celebrate officially as Day of Red Army.
But in 1933, in article devoted just to 15-year anniversary of Red Army, the national commissioner K. Voroshilov dropped the hint of doubt concerning reality of historical date of a holiday. But in "Stories of All-Union Communist Party (bolsheviks). A short course" personally "the leader of the people" Iosif Stalin specified that near Pskov and Narva in 1918 "the German invaders were given resolute repulse. Their advance was suspended. Day of repulse to troops of the German imperialism — — became on February 23 birthday of young Red Army". Later, in 1942, the paragraph about these events in "History" was once again edited and now: "The young groups of Red Army which for the first time entered war crushed the German aggressors near Pskov and Narva on February 23, 1918. For this reason day was declared on February 23 by birthday of Red Army". The Soviet promotion needed to support fighting spirit of the people, after all there was a Great Patriotic War.
Since 1946 on February 23 it was celebrated as Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. Up to collapse of the USSR this holiday was in the red afternoon of a calendar and it was celebrated by military parade, salutes. After disorder of the Soviet Union the holiday remained, in particular, in the Russian Federation, in Ukraine, in Belarus, but already as the Defender of the Fatherland Day. In Russia since 1995 on February 23 is the day off, and in Ukraine and Belarus – no.
Now on February 23 do not connect neither with Red Army, nor with any army any more in general. Now is a day of men in which it is accepted to congratulate all relatives and dear men: husband, father, grandfather, son, friend, colleague. Presently on February 23 is "the reciprocal course" to a female holiday – the International Women's Day. Women give to the beloveds gifts, cards, organize for them parties and show. That is possible and that it is impossible to give to men on the Defender of the Fatherland Day you can read in our following articles.
